25000 Candidates Ignore Chance to Appear in JEE (Advanced) gateway to IIT

As many as 25,000 students who were shortlisted for the JEE (Advanced) 2015 ignored the chance to appear in the IIT entrance exam, reveals a new report. The registration process for JEE (Advanced) 2015 closed on Thursday and out of a total of 152,401 candidates who were shortlisted for the exam, just over 125,000 registered.
More than 13 lakh students across the country appeared in the JEE (Main) exam this year. JEE (Advanced) 2015 will be held on May 24, 2015.
Interestingly, the same number of students did not appear in JEE (Advanced) in 2014 as well.
In 2014, seats were offered by 16 IITs along with the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. The total number of seats offered stood at 9,784. In 2015, however, four more IITs are likely to offer seats including the new IITs at Chhattisgarh, Goa, Tirupati and Palghat. The combined capacity of these four IITs will be somewhere around 360 seats.
“There are many students who do not want to be away from their home and parents. There are some states which are no more conducting their own engineering exam. In such a case, the child prefers to take admission in a state engineering college on the basis of his rank in JEE (main),” said former JEE (advanced) chairperson HC Gupta.
Mr. Gupta pointed out that many OBC students back out because they simply cannot furnish their caste certificates for registration.
Hindustan Times quotes an IIT professor as saying: “Those students who have very low marks feel that they may not be able to qualify. So they prefer to keep themselves away.”
