Cauvery water dispute: All you need to know

The Cauvery water dispute, which has been a bone of contention between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu for decades now, has again led to violence in the region after Supreme Court pronounced its order on Monday. The court has directed Karnataka state government to release 15,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu for the next 10 days in an attempt to save the samba crops.

Cauvery Horata Samiti, the organisation which has been at the forefront of issue in Karnataka, called for a statewide ‘bandh’ leading to violent protests by farmers. The protests have affected public transport facilities, schools, colleges and government offices in Mandya.

The Cauvery water dispute has influenced the politics of the region for long with parties stirring emotions of people as the river has a deep cultural, economic and religious significance for them. This, in turn, led to a situation where the public opinion became more rigid with time making it even difficult for the political outfits to find a common ground.

What is the dispute?

The Cauvery basin covers a large expanse of land including major chunks in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and also smaller areas in Kerala and Puducherry. Initially, the dispute was between Karnataka and TN but later Kerala and Puducherry also entered the fray. The issue dates back to 1892 when an agreement was filed between Madras Presidency and Mysore for arbitration but led to a fresh set of disputes. Later, attempts were renewed to arbitrate between the two states under supervision of Government of India and second agreement was signed in 1924.

LIFE (live felicitously everyday)

All that starts has to end,
be it good or be it bad,
take a step and gently bend,
accept the truth, don't be sad,
life has its own way of giving,
stop complaining and start cherishing.

Some day, you may go up,
other day might go down,
invalid enough to really frown,
happy or sad, joy or sorrow,
whatever it is, all will go tomorrow.

People may come and people may go,
remainder will be memories,
everything in you, let it flow,
sometimes you win and sometimes lose,
not to worry upon and wisely choose,
to move forward and break boundaries.

Past is history,
Future is mystery,
Today is present,
that will go in a swift,
gear up my dear,
accept the gift.

Life is all about space and dime,
So take one, One day,
One day at a time.

Beat Your Anxiety

Neglecting your mental health is a silent killer that will cripple your quality of life. Increased stress, anxiety, and frustration can even lead to mental illness if ignored.
Just as your physical fitness and health depend on avoiding detrimental habits, there are destructive mental habits you need to avoid. Here are seven simple practices for a healthy, happy mind:

1. When you start "catastrophic thinking," notice. Try to process a situation objectively.
When unforeseen complications arise, we tend to default to the “worst-case scenario” — getting an email from your boss automatically means you’re about to get fired. It’s an exaggerated defense mechanism, according to evolutionary psychologists; these fearful thoughts are supposed to steer you away from ever doing anything detrimental.
Here's the thing about catastrophic thinking: It's irrational. It causes your brain to produce cortisol and create stress. The key is to prevent your mind from jumping to conclusions. Process a situation objectively, as it unfolds, with the information you have at hand. Don’t let your mind start playing with hypotheticals.

2. Train yourself to be decisive. (It's easier than it sounds.)
Whether it’s an important decision, or simply the question of what to have for dinner, people experience anxiety when making decisions. Decision paralysis comes from being presented with too many options. While we think it's more desirable to have more options, it actually inhibits your ability to decide.
To overcome this mental hurdle, you need to clarify your “non-negotiables” before you make a decision. What’s the most important element required for you to be satisfied? Then, use the “3-2-1” rule: From all the options you have, choose the best three that match your criteria, then the best two, then make a decision.

3. When feelings of doubt arise, turn to your journal.
It’s that voice of doubt that creeps in every time you take on a major venture or pursue a goal. The voice tells you that you’re not good enough, that you’re not qualified, that you’re a fraud — despite the evidence that you’re more than competent. One cause psychologists have identified for this condition is overly critical parenting. Children of critical parents internalize that voice.
One way to overcome it is to keep a journal of your achievements. Whenever feelings of doubt and fraudulence come, silence that voice by looking back at what you’ve accomplished.

4. Escape the mind smog.
While the link between cellphone use and cancer is still hotly debated, there’s no doubt that exposure to electromagnetic waves has an effect on your mind. We’re constantly exposed to non-ionizing radiation from power lines, cellphone towers, and wireless devices; and microwave frequencies below can penetrate the outer layers of your skin.
Give your mind a daily break from the smog of technology. To some extent, it's unavoidable, but for the sake of your mental health, give yourself at least a one-hour technology timeout. Take a walk in the park, and leave your phone behind.

5. Flex your mental muscles.
A healthy mind is a focused and fit mind. We live in a world of distractions; not being able to concentrate and get work done is a major source of frustration and anxiety. Work on building your focus muscles.
Meditative practices that focus on uninterrupted breathing are highly effective, as is committing to uninterrupted writing, for at least 30 minutes every morning.

6. Hack your happy chemicals.
The way your brain regulates and releases neurochemicals affects the way you feel. When you’re feeling stressed and anxious, you can help your brain alleviate and override those feelings — it’s been shown that even a forced smile will cause your brain to release endorphins.
Giving someone a hug will give you a rush of the “love hormone,” oxytocin; the smell of lavender and vanilla, and the taste of dark chocolate all stimulate the release of endorphins.
Rather than waiting to feel better, sometimes you’ve got to make it happen.

7. End your day on a high note.
Gratitude practices are incredibly powerful and beneficial for your mental health. Studies have shown that people who consistently practice gratitude have stronger immune systems, are more optimistic, compassionate, and happy, and feel less lonely and isolated.
Before you nod off to sleep tonight, think of five things you’re grateful for. Make it a daily practice.

Chivarlous habits to melt a woman's heart

14 Chivalrous Habits Of Men That Can Make A Woman’s Heart Melt

“Chivalry… None of it is a reflection of me, but a reflection of them.” ― Donna Lynn Hope
In a time like this, chivalry seems obscure more often than not. We are afraid to even date, let alone get into a relationship, simply for the fear of getting hurt, fearing that only the worst of all scenarios await us. We do not expect simple heartfelt gestures, rather are always dreading what might go wrong the next minute, what might open unforeseen wounds.
We expect to be bruised, not cherished and have our guards up always. And so when we do get cherished, get appreciated, get admired for what we are, we feel like we are on cloud nine. Because chivalrous habits might be old school, but they’ll always have their value intact. So do take note, because these 14 acts of chivalry wouldn’t take much effort on the guy’s part, but would most definitely make him look like a knight in shining armour.
1. Picking you up for a date
Whether in a car or just to walk you till the cafe next door, picking up a girl from her doorstep for a date never goes out of style.

2. Holding doors open for people
Whether it’s you he’s holding the door ajar for, or another person in front of you, it’s adorable.

3. Guarding you with their body, just in case
Whether to shield you from the sudden rain or while navigating through a large crowd, it gives you the message that he’s there for you.

4. Offering their jacket, or holding yours for you to get in
The warmth of his heart is sure to touch you along with the warmth of the jacket!

5. Giving you flowers, when you are least expecting it
It doesn’t have to be a big bouquet or even a rose. But flowers never fail to melt you, do they?

6. Offering you food or drink from his share
Sure, you have your own portion, but sharing IS caring.

7. Spending time with you doing what you like
It could be watching Notting Hill for the umpteenth time (even if he doesn’t like it), or going shopping with you.

8. Standing up for a woman when she is in need of support
Be it you or a random stranger, nothing is hotter than a guy standing up for a lady.

9. Being on time
Being punctual is a trait that never goes out of style, be it turning up for your movie date, or simply for an appointment.

10. And keeping promises, no matter how small they are
Even if it’s as small as calling or texting when he said he would, keeping promises shows that you’re a priority in his life.

11. Not mansplaining, ever
Exchanging knowledge is one thing, but being condescending to a woman is the last thing that a girl would want from her guy.

12. Giving heartfelt compliments
Whether it’s about the way she talks or anything else good about her, or even to the old lady passing by, compliments are uber cool, always.

13. Not beating around the bush
A guy who is open about his feelings never fails to win a girl’s heart.

14. Being respectful to people
Being respectful to a woman, or any person, even if it’s the cab driver or the waiter, shows that the man has a heart of gold.
Because good things, like chivalry, should never die out.

'GOD' as a NEEDLESS HYPOTHESIS

'Is it neccessary to believe in God to be a good person?
I think not. In a way the traditional notion of God is outdated. One can be spiritual but not religious.
Some of the best people in history did not believe in God, while some of the worst deeds were committed in HIS name, and even today such incidents can be heard of.'

These are not the words of a free thinking rationalist that religious fanatics are grumping for. They are the words of Pope Francis- the first pope from America.

More than a century after Nietzche proclaimed his demise, is humankind beginning to feel that- like an adolescent who outgrows childish clothes- we have outgrown the psychological, emotional and spiritual need of God.

Socio -biologists claim that religion and concept of God not only helped our proto-human ancestors understand the forces of nature, such as thunder and lightening, but also served an evolutionary purpose. Those who worshipped a particular deity formed a caln, or tribe, the members of which would help each other in conflicts with other clans and in the sharing of resources such as food, so as to enhance the chances of survival of the entire group.

According to socio-biology, in pre-history, religion served an evolutionary end. The more cohesive a factor religion was in bonding a clan together, and making it better equipped to overcome competing claims in the struggle for survival, the more effective it became as an evolutionary tool.

From the outset, religions were genetically programmed to vie with each other in fierce, often centually violent, competition.'Stronger' religions- which not only had a comparatively larger number of followers, but whose adherents were more committed to their common faith system and therefore to each other-prevailed over weaker religions which lacked both number and unanswering singleness of belief.

Fanaticism, unquestioning and unquestionable dogma, became the adernaline, the testosterone, of religion; violence, latent or manifest, say at the heart all religions creeds.

Spiritual masters like Buddha and Mahavira, Jessus and Muhammad and Guru Nanak- evolutionary mutants, who saw through the illusory divisiness of religious barriers to the undifferentiated unity of the human spirit- preached a gospel of oneness. But their followes subverted their teachings to foster separateness and strife, from the crusades, to the civil war in Buddhist Sri Lanka, to Khalistani terriorism, to the rise of the IS and the killing of rationalist in India and Bangladesh by Hindu and Islamic fanatics.

From being an aid to human evolution, religion has become one of the most serious threats to civilization, a construct based not just on the airy-fairy ideal of a common humanity but on the literally down-to-Earth reality that all of us share a common planet equally endangered by environmental despoilation and religio-political jingoism.

The backlash against religionhas been spear-headed by scientists like Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris who have cogently and eloquently argued that far from being a negationof moral codes and an ethical life, atheism as a form of consciousness- raising is an affirmation of spiritual transcenence.

When the french philosopher- mathematicain Pierre-Simon Laplace presenteda copy of his monumental work on the creation of the universe, Mecanique Celeste, to Napolean, the soldier-emporer asked, why there was no mention of GOD in the book. Laplace replied- "I had no money of that Hypothesis."

Is it time we outgrow that "needless hypothesis"? Those who say it is, can do so with the blessings of Pope Francis.
